We are coming together to support the Urbanski-Carpenter family as they navigate their baby's Spina Bifida journey. I am Carolyn's sister, Becca.
On January 19th, 2026, Carolyn and Luke received life-changing news: their baby was diagnosed with Myelomeningocele, a severe form of Spina Bifida, with an open lesion from L3-S1. Baby also has club feet which is linked to Spina Bifida. While every child's journey is unique, this diagnosis has presented Carolyn and Luke with many difficult decisions, challenges, and an uncertain road ahead.
In the coming weeks, Carolyn will undergo fetal surgery to close the lesion, which is a highly specialized procedure which must be done before birth to give their baby the best possible outcome. This surgery requires Carolyn to travel to Chicago for an extended period of time and for both parents to be away from work during the procedure, recovery, and ongoing medical care.
In addition to the emotional weight of this diagnosis, the financial burden is significant and unexpected. Costs include:
- Medical bills and hospital stays not covered by insurance
- Travel and housing near the hospital during recovery in Chicago
- Lost income while away from work
- Essentials for first few months of life
- Specialist visits (neurology, orthopedics, urology, and physical medicine)
- Therapies, including physical and occupational therapy
- Adaptive equipment to help baby explore, move, and grow
- Possible home modifications to ensure a safe and accessible environment
- Travel costs for specialty clinics and long-term care planning
Anyone who knows Carolyn and Luke knows they are loving, devoted, and would do anything for their baby. Right now, their focus needs to be on making the best medical decisions and caring for their child, not worrying about how to manage overwhelming expenses.
We are raising funds to help ease the financial strain so they can focus on what truly matters- the health and future of their baby. Even the smallest contribution can make a meaningful difference in giving this baby the best possible change to live a joyful, independent life full of possibilities. More than anything, your love, prayers, and support will be a powerful source of strength for Carolyn and Luke as they walk this journey together.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support during this incredibly important time.
With gratitude,
The Urbanski Family
