Hi, my name is Tammika my son Mason 16 years was admitted to hospital in may this year, he was feeling unwel he felt nauseous and vomited a few times, I couldn’t get into our drs so I called a locum to come to the house, the dr said there was a gastro bug going round and prescribed Mason some nausea tablets, Mason wasn’t looking any better the next day tho no vomiting, I let him rest and made a drs appointment at our local drs , she had given us a referral to get blood test done the Monday as it was mid-day Saturday luckily to this phone call an hour after getting bloods taken the pathologist called me and said " Mason was having kidney failure and to get him to the nearest hospital asap" we arrived had test done and was rushed off yet another hospital a few hours had passed maybe 4-5 hours till we arrived at another hospital at this stage Mason had deteriorated he's lip turning blue and he’s face was looked a light grey I didn’t think he was going to survive i seen it as for a mother it was my worst nightmare.
They then started giving me answers...
When mason arrived at the hospital we were transferred to at 3am he's kidneys were in fact at just 3% i understood most of the answers they gave me everything started to make senseand that Masons had been suffering kidney failure for some what years while there not being to many signs had got his there in time and one-day we would go home and I could take mason with me. Though they said he will need a kidney transplant. after blood test, dna, X-rays and a bunch of other scans masons condition was a one of a kind
Masons blood group O + had a mutant which is the reasons behind him already being colour blind and need glasses since he was 4 years old it's usually when U are in your 40s that the kidney transplant part is usually not 16, they said.
- A mutant in he's blood group he's blood group
Blood group - O Positive
... Due to he's kidneys failing for years, they said, he’s bones had become soft the brittle as he’s red blood count was so low he’s body took from he’s bone marrow
- Mason now has - Seniors lokens Disease and relies on dialysis to filter he's kidneys till he gets a kidney transplant.
He requires high nutrition, proteins and vitamins to keep his potassium and calcium levels for his immune system to be strong and repair all this damage to his body.
Dialysis at home 9 hours a night has helped mason gain weight and get some what stronger..
Mason now remains in a wheelchair till he’s hips are replaced and he has to have kidney transplants
Masons made us all so proud of how brave and strong he is. While mates are socializing n partying with friends getting their licenses, buying cars beginning their lives starting jobs and making money masons barely able to spend a few hours out of the house.
we have recently completed training for home dialysis which is working out to be good for us as we’re a while away from the hospital.
I am not the type to put my life public but I have no other choice and running out of options,
I’m hopefully looking to raise $5000 anything I can to put towards fuel for appointments to and from when required, things that mason requires till he's surgery and recovering from surgery
decent food- making sure he's nutrition and vitamin levels
fuel to and from appointments,
medications
medical equipment
and thing to him comfortably and possitive so he can get back to the best years of he life.
I am the sole provider for my 3 children and unable to work as I'm Mason's full time carer. I get carers allowance and family tax benefits and get $18 maitenance from Mason's father.
Mason won’t be able to walk if he doesn’t get he’s hip surgery or body will not function without kidney transplant.
Mason was already 16 years old before being diagnosed, he is no longer seen as a child is the health system I am not in any place to cover him with private health.
Mason holds him self so well and after doing home dialysis he has come from 44kg to 56kg,
he’s education has been put on hold as he’s life was turned upside down went from being around and always hanging with mates and now he’s restricted being home for while he didn’t want to leave he’s room, he been though several surgery’s with PD tubes in he’s groin , then APD tube in he neck artery then one in he’s stomach Mason was awake and didn’t hesitate to have any of the surgeries when we came home I could help but empathize how significant his life had sudenly become.
