This journey started when I turned in my resignation letter for my government job in Milwaukee, WI where I’ve lived for 21 of my 26 years. I love Milwaukee and always will but I’ve been called to do more for my city than what I have done so far. I recognize what our city lacks. We are to be so much more. We are in a global race for talent, and when geographic mobility is as easy as it has ever been, we can’t afford not to make the improvements, investments, and commitments needed to be a world class city.
And that requires leaving. I will be undertaking a working holiday through Central & South America then over to Europe to learn & immerse myself in what I believe to be the greatest creation of humankind: cities for the people. I will be studying what makes cities great for the masses- robust public transportation, walkable neighborhoods, quality public gathering places, high density housing, cultural & entertainment districts.
This trip is about what brings people of all walks of life together and enriches our lives- connection to one another. My time will be spent studying spaces as well as interviewing people about what works in their city & what doesn’t. We are designed to live among & serve one another & immersing myself in the best of that will help me to better fulfill my life’s purpose: help make Milwaukee a world class city for all.
I will be documenting my travels and new knowledge at website that will be live in the coming weeks & @mkemontavius Twitter + @montavius.jones IG
THANK YOU for your support in this hopefully life changing & ultimately city changing journey.
