A Meal & Book for Moonlight Girls in Kenya

Based in Dagoretti Corner, Moonlight Academy is a tin-roofed school providing educational nourishment to some of the most deprived and needy girls in Nairobi’s informal settlements. Here the girls’ elusive dream of attaining a secondary school education is not only brought to life but also realised, through free and subsidized educational arrangements. Because many of the girls come from very impoverished households, Moonlight is also the only place where most of these girls find their daily meal, often a rare mix of Rice and Beans!

A month ago, due to COVID-19’s pandemic, all schools in Kenya were shut down, including Moonlight and people were asked to stay at home in a bid to curb the spread of the virus. In Kenya, most of the people living in the informal settlements live from hand to mouth in the most literal sense, meaning that they do not have savings which they can survive on or live off at the moment. Unlike some states, unfortunately, Kenya does not have a relief fund for unemployed people that could be most helpful at such a time.47600538_1587632102247358_r.jpeg

It is because of the above situation that the school’s founder, Mr. Aluda can barely close his eyelids at night as he keeps on getting numerous phone calls by girls from his school asking for assistance as they face starvation of food and education. In a bid to try and help, since as much as we would like to help everyone it is not possible, he has identified 45 girls who are the neediest in that community and who direly need our assistance. As TAP Africa, we are willing to help but we all know, even with the best intentions, one man, one woman can only do so much in a time of crisis such as this!

That is why, we, #Team TAP Africa, having worked with Moonlight girls on our most successful Teens Weave Stars to End Violence project, and with a deep understanding of the absolute level of need among these girls, are appealing for your help in providing a "meal & book" to each one of them.
