Tyler's Kidney Transplant and recovery fund
Donation protected
Before 2017, Tyler was a healthy and energetic young adult. He was just about to begin UNC Chapel Hill’s masters in public administration program and had a job working for the department of transportation. Tyler started with flu like symptoms that he couldn’t seem to recover from. After losing 10-15 pounds, bloodwork, and a hospital admission he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the digestive tract. The Crohn’s disease is managed with bimonthly infusions and periodic doctor visits that place a heavy financial burden on any patient.
In February of 2021 he began to feel symptomatic again. After a couple of weeks of feeling fatigued he decided to go to the hospital. What he thought was a flare up from Crohn’s disease or possibly COVID-19 turned out to be end stage renal disease, the last stage of chronic kidney disease. According to the doctor his kidneys are barely functioning. The cause, mostly unknown, has been associated with complications from Crohn’s disease. Hopefully, we will learn more in the coming months.
Unfortunately, Tyler is now required to receive hemodialysis three days a week until he is able to be healthy enough to be a candidate for a transplant surgery to replace one of his kidneys in the next 1-2 years. Soon, Tyler will begin home hemodialysis (HHD) requiring both Tyler and his partner of 7 years, Julia, to attend 5 weeks of intensive training. Julia will be taking a leave of absence from work for training to be able to be Tyler's primary support resource.
Due to the intensity of the therapies required in order for Tyler to get healthy, he is currently unable to work. Even with insurance the estimated costs of treatment, transplant, and recovery are an extremely heavy burden. Please consider donating to this fundraiser in order to assist our friend, Tyler, on his transplant journey. Funds raised will be used primarily for direct medical costs.
