On Friday, January 23 at approximately 10:30 a.m., our beloved grandmother, age 62, was struck and killed by a vehicle while lawfully walking in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of El Camino Real and 17th Avenue in San Mateo. This was a preventable tragedy that occurred at an intersection known by many in the community to be dangerous and unsafe for pedestrians. She crossed the street the way she always did, with care and awareness. She looked both ways, remained attentive to traffic, and took every precaution. For nearly 40 years, she followed the same daily routine, working hard cleaning houses, taking the bus, and walking to work with pride, responsibility, and independence. She did everything right. That routine never changed, until her life was taken while doing something as simple and human as crossing the street. Despite her care and caution, she was still a victim of preventable failures in road safety. No one should lose their life while responsibly crossing the street. Her death has left our family heartbroken and suddenly facing overwhelming funeral and burial expenses. She was a wife, the mother of six, a grandmother to fourteen, and a newly proud great-grandmother to one. She was also a devoted daughter who lovingly cared for her 96-year-old mother. She was someone loved by many and so full of life. For too long, the city has ignored the repeated tragedies on this road, allowing a known dangerous intersection to remain unchanged. Beyond honoring her life, our family hopes her story brings attention to the urgent need for safer streets, stronger pedestrian protections, and real change at this intersection so no other family has to endure this kind of loss. Our family hopes to lay her to rest in a way that reflects the love, dignity, and care she gave to everyone around her.
