My name is TaMara. In 1981, I met one of the greatest friends of my life. Her name is Kendra, and for more than forty years she has been my friend, my sister, and part of my heart.

Like true best friends do, we walked through life’s biggest moments together. In 1992, I had the honor of being with her when she gave birth to her son, Ben. He had the sweetest face and the most unforgettable little ears that seemed to stick out just enough to say hello to the world. I was one of the very first people to hold him, and that memory has stayed with me for more than thirty years.

A few days ago, Kendra called to tell me that Ben had passed away.

Ben struggled with addiction. He fought hard, and he was working to reclaim his life. But addiction is a cruel disease, and after one heartbreaking misstep, he lost that battle.

Now Kendra, Allan, Galena, and an entire circle of loving family and friends are preparing to say goodbye to Ben.
