A Love Letter To My Sisters - Thesis Project

Hi Everyone! My name is Elaine Acevedo, and I am a senior Visual Arts student at Montclair State University photographing and creatively directing my thesis piece, A Love Letter To My Sisters.

About Me

I am a New Jersey-based multimedia artist concentrating on photography. My work features photographs that depict the traditions of portrait photography, honoring and celebrating the amplitude of social and gender diversity. Conceptually, my work symbolizes themes of individual expression and vulnerability, emphasizing one’s identity and how’s that viewed privately and publicly.

A Love Letter To My Sisters

A Love Letter To My Sisters is a photo series that speaks on the importance of sisterhood and the resilience that it takes to navigate this world through a women’s body - by rooting and uplifting one another. Through photography and video, I want to create and show moments of connection between women in intimate and public settings. I believe that collective sisterhood is so integral to gender equality as we have a duty and responsibility to hold, protect, and love one another. This piece is for my girls, my sisterhood - the ones who have loved and supported me, the ones who don’t know me, the ones who suffer through body imprisonment, the ones who want to feel heard and seen, the ones who can relate, and the one’s who aren’t fortunate enough to have a support system of girls:

We are all different but made for each other.

This is what it’s all about, our community, our girls.

Why Analog?

It brings me a thrill to say that my project will all be shot through an analog process. For me, shooting on film creates an attentive atmosphere and focus, elevating the whole production and demands a more considered and thoughtful approach to photographing and filming. It’s mostly the perfect “imperfections” of film that excites me - the dreamlike visuals and depth.
