Hi, my name is Cara and I would like to raise some funds for ‘The British Heart Foundation’ by trekking up mountain Kilimanjaro this summer ️.
This trek will take me through dense tropical rainforest, moorland and snow until I reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point. This is one of the most challenging charity treks at altitude, climbing one of the most impressive mountains in the world. On reaching the summit I endeavour to feel a sense of overwhelming achievement. The climb is approximately 68 km, almost 6000 metres above sea level and will take around 8 days. The high altitude will be a huge challenge, that will be difficult to prepare for.
There has been a lot of tragedy in my family over the years, we have been affected by various heart conditions.
In 1996 our Dad suddenly passed away when I was just 14, he suffered a huge heart attack a week before his wedding day at the age of 53. My Grandad also suffered a huge heart attack at the age of 56, he was resuscitated and survived but unfortunately was never the same and had to be cared for until he passed away in 2003 at the age of 66.
In 2019 my amazing uncle Mike suddenly passed away at the age of 53. He had an undiagnosed heart condition. I loved him so much, he was always the father figure in my life from a young age, I felt safe and protected when he was around and always wanted to make him proud. When I asked him to walk me down the aisle, it was one of the most emotional and happy times of my life, it was so important to me for my uncle Mike to give me away, that’s all I’d ever wanted! Tragically this never happened
After our Dad passed away we were told that heart disease was hereditary. Myself and my siblings as-well as my own children, nieces and nephews have all been tested for any heart abnormalities. My big bro Jamie at the age of 46 was due to have a stent fitted after many tests. When he went in to hospital to have this surgery, he was then told that his heart was worse than they’d initially thought and he could potentially die at any moment! He ended up needing a triple bypass- an operation that would save his life. Today he lives life to the full after many months and years of rehab .
The BHF is the biggest independent funder of heart and circulatory research in the UK. They help find cures and treatments to give people more time with loved ones.
The BHF fund over £100 million of lifesaving research into heart and circulatory diseases each year . They support individuals and families when needed the most, and campaign for a healthier world .
