Hi! My name is Malia. I was born and raised in Pahala, Kaʻū, on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. I’m creating this GoFundMe to help my mom and stepdad after our family was impacted by Hurricane Lala.

A little after 9:30 PM on Saturday, August 15, an unexpected flood rushed through our backyard. Within moments, the water damaged and swept away things my mom and stepdad had worked years for. Watching so much of their hard work disappear in one night was heartbreaking.

We’re simply hoping for a little help restoring what was damaged and replacing some of what was lost — including repairs to their fencing and our home’s stilts, along with replacing their coffee pulper, fertilizers, lawn mower, pressure washer, outdoor tools, and more. With their insurance not covering flood damage, the cost of recovering and rebuilding will unfortunately fall on them out of pocket. 

My parents aren’t asking to replace everything. I just want to help take a little weight off their shoulders as they pick up the pieces, restore what they can, and slowly move forward.
