My Ukranian friend, a free-lance writer, lost everything in a building bombed by Russian artillery in Mariupol. Her apartment was on the fifth floor and everything burned. She lost her clothes and books and furniture and bedding and irreplaceable momentos. She managed to escape westward, along a dangerous, mined road,  with some friends.  She had only her phone and the clothes she had at the time. She feels like one of the lucky ones because she's alive and has her health (for now). With her meager savings she was able to rent a small apartment in Dnipro for about 300 dollars a month. As the war goes on and on without hope of peace, she can't find a job, but spends her days volunteering - taking medicine to the home-bound elderly, tending to wounded soldiers in hospitals, and finding supplies like helmets and first aid kits so that soldiers who are able can return to the front.  Lupita and I and another friend have helped her with a couple of months rent - though she has never asked for a dime.  We can't do anything about the war, but perhaps we  can help one person find some peace so she can go about helping others. I ask you to join us in helping her. She can receive money via paypal so I'll take whatever is raised here and send 100 percent of it (less gofundme fees) to her. Alyona has no idea I'm doing this and it would likely embarrass her if she did know, because she just wants to work. For now, though, finding work seems unlikely in a city that is being shelled almost daily.
