If you know my mom, Melissa then you know what I mean when I say that to know her is to love her. On December 12th of this last year I took her to the emergency room because she had horrible chills and abdominal pain. It turns out she has a pretty large kidney stone that led to an infection which led to sepsis. This led to septic shock. My mom has such a high pain tolerance and is very independent and intent on helping others. She probably had this kidney stone for over a month. That night in the ER I watched her go into septic shock. She very easily could have died if she had not gone that night. The next day she was admitted into the ICU. My mom ended up being on a ventilator for 10 days. The infection was eventually controlled but it was so bad in the beginning that it led to uncontrollable seizures. Once these were under control she was able to get off of the ventilator. Unfortunately, due to some of the life saving medications she was on, she has had complications with her fingers and toes. Vasopressor medications can lead to tissue death in extremities in order to keep a person alive. After finally being able to go to ICU step down she did eventually have to have surgery on her toes on January 4th. She still has a lot of recovering to do. Her wounds are not completely healed on her hands and fingers yet but we’re getting there. She’s getting extensive wound care, physical therapy, and occupational therapy so that she can get back to the woman we all know and love. She will eventually have to get this kidney stone out but insurance will not cover the surgery while she’s inpatient. As we all know she’s very independent and maybe even a little hard headed so being in the hospital is very hard for her. We all need help sometimes and I know that it’s inevitable that she will have a lot of medical bills after this month + long stay in the hospital. My mom’s healing is our priority. She’s been so stressed since even before all of this happened and I would do anything to make sure she doesn’t have to worry about anything but healing anymore. She loves taking care of others but right now she needs taken care of. Thank you
