A Life-Saving Companion : Diabetic Service Dog

Dear Family, Friends, Compassionate individuals and my community
My name is Taylor Janes, and I am 23 years old, living with Type 1 diabetes—a condition that has shaped my life in ways I never imagined. Recently, I faced the most terrifying experience of my life: I did not wake up for over 24 hours due to dangerously low blood sugar. Alone in my apartment, completely unaware that my body was shutting down.It wasn’t until a close friend, growing increasingly worried after not hearing from me, alerted my parents. When they arrived, they found me barely conscious— unresponsive, and in urgent need of help. They called 911, and I was rushed to the hospital, where I remained for a week, fighting to recover. The thought that I might not have woken up at all still haunts me.Living alone, this experience was a stark and painful reminder of just how vulnerable I am.

The reality is, Type 1 diabetes doesn’t give warnings loud enough to wake me when I’m slipping into danger. My blood sugar can drop to life-threatening levels while I sleep, and without intervention, I may not get another chance to wake up. The fear of this happening again is something I now carry with me every single day. That’s why I am reaching out. I desperately need a diabetic service dog—a specially trained companion who can detect dangerous blood sugar levels before it’s too late. These incredible dogs can alert me, wake me up if I become unresponsive, and even get help if I am unable to. A service dog wouldn’t just be a safety measure; it would be my lifeline. It could mean the difference between waking up or not, between life and death.

However, these life-saving dogs come at an overwhelming cost—between $25,000 and $50,000—far beyond what I can afford on my own. I am humbly asking for your help. Every donation, no matter the amount, brings me one step closer to having a guardian by my side—one that could save my life when no one else is there. If you are unable to donate, simply sharing my story could make all the difference in helping me reach this goal.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your kindness, your generosity, and your support. This is not just about managing my diabetes—it’s about surviving it.

 With gratitude,
Taylor
