On March 5th, our family was changed forever.
My husband, Darren, suffered a devastating medical event while driving home from his night shift. His vehicle went off the road, and he was ejected—thrown 30 feet down a cliff. For an entire hour, he lay there undiscovered, unresponsive.
When first responders found him, a miracle had already taken place.
Though he could not respond, Darren was still breathing.
He was rushed to the nearest trauma center, where he continues to fight for his life.
Today, Darren is facing the unimaginable. He has sustained a severe traumatic brain injury that is expected to prevent him from opening his eyes, speaking, or intentionally expressing emotion. He also has a significant spinal injury that will prohibit him from walking, feeding himself, or performing any of his daily needs.
And yet—he is still here.
And we are holding on to hope.
Darren is an extraordinary man. At 6’4” with a radiant smile, he could light up any room he walked into. More than anything, he is a devoted father and a loving partner who always put our family first. He took immense pride in being present for our children—ages 2, 12, and 19.
Some of our most cherished memories are of Darren out on the field with our boys, teaching them not just how to be great athletes, but how to be kind, strong, and compassionate men. That’s who he is.
In the face of this tragedy, our lives have been completely transformed—but our faith remains unshaken. We are believing in Darren’s recovery, even as we prepare for a long and uncertain road ahead.
As I now step into the split role of full-time caregiver while raising our three children, we are facing overwhelming challenges, including:
Ongoing and long-term medical expenses
Specialized equipment and care needs
Long-term acute care facility costs
Childcare support for our children
Transportation to school (we do not have a school bus in Baltimore City)
