A letter and invitation — Les Rencontres d'Arles

Before I came to Arles last autumn, I wasn’t in a good place. I was struggling with depression and barely had the words to explain why I wanted to study abroad at the École nationale supérieure de la photographie. But the desire had always been there — to go somewhere new, learn a language, and discover another culture. Somehow, I found the strength to write a letter. And in the end, I made it here.

I hoped to meet people who shared my passion. What I found was so much more: friendships, inspiration, and a place where I feel safe being myself.

Arles is a beautiful city — full of light, art, and life. But what makes it truly special for me are the people I’ve met: artists, musicians, researchers, farmers, baristas, market vendors — generous, creative souls who welcomed me with open arms. I’m grateful to call some of them friends.

Over the past months, I’ve been looking for a way to express what this time has meant. One result is a project called studio, which I developed during my time at the school here. It began in my tiny eight-square-meter room — a space where I live, sleep, and create. Through quiet photographs and small sculptural experiments, I turned this space into something like a voyage immobile — a way of seeing and feeling from the inside out.

Now, I have the chance to share this work — and more — during Les Rencontres d’Arles, one of the oldest and most important photography festival in the world. I’ve been offered a beautiful space in La Roquette, completely rent-free — something incredibly rare and valuable here. It’s an opportunity made possible only through the support and generosity of local friends and the community I’ve come to know.

To realize this — my first solo exhibition — I’m asking for your support. The money raised will go toward covering production costs, sharing locally sourced food and drinks at a beautiful little vernissage, fairly rewarding the invited artists for their contributions, and closing the show with a finissage en beauté.

Production includes not just printing, but also making a small edition, framing the works properly, and preparing them for public presentation. I have many ideas for how to present the work — and your support would give me the freedom to experiment, to learn through doing, and to explore how the installation itself can become part of the narrative.

The exhibition will run from July 15th to 20th, with a collaborative music performance planned for the middle of the week — and another to celebrate the finissage.

DE: — an meine Freund:innen, Familie und darüber hinaus

Bevor ich im letzten Herbst nach Arles kam, ging es mir nicht gut. Ich steckte in einer Depression und hatte kaum Worte dafür, warum ich unbedingt ein Auslandssemester an der École nationale supérieure de la photographie machen wollte. Aber der Wunsch war schon lange da — rauszukommen, eine neue Sprache zu lernen, eine andere Kultur zu erleben. Irgendwann habe ich die Kraft gefunden, einen Brief zu schreiben. Und irgendwie hat es geklappt: Ich bin hier.

Ich hatte gehofft, Menschen zu treffen, die meine Leidenschaft teilen. Was ich gefunden habe, war viel mehr: Freundschaften, Inspiration — und einen Ort, an dem ich mich sicher fühle und einfach sein kann, wie ich bin.

Arles ist eine schöne Stadt. Viel Licht, viel Kunst, viel Leben. Aber was diesen Ort für mich besonders macht, sind die Menschen. Künstler\:innen, Musiker\:innen, Wissenschaftler\:innen, Landwirt\:innen, Baristas, Markthändler\:innen — offene, kreative Menschen, die mich willkommen geheißen haben. Ich bin froh, einige von ihnen heute Freund\:innen nennen zu dürfen.

In den letzten Monaten habe ich nach einer Form gesucht, um auszudrücken, was diese Zeit für mich bedeutet. Entstanden ist das Projekt studio, das ich während meiner Zeit an der Schule hier entwickelt habe. Es beginnt in meinem kleinen Zimmer — acht Quadratmeter, in denen ich lebe, schlafe, denke und arbeite. Durch stille Fotografien und kleine skulpturale Eingriffe wurde dieser Raum zu einer Art voyage immobile — eine unbewegte Reise, ein Versuch, von innen nach außen zu schauen.

Jetzt habe ich die Möglichkeit, diese Arbeit — und mehr — im Rahmen der Rencontres d’Arles zu zeigen, einem der ältesten und renommiertesten Fotofestivals der Welt. Ich habe dafür einen wunderbaren Raum im Viertel La Roquette angeboten bekommen — komplett mietfrei. Eine seltene Gelegenheit, möglich gemacht durch die Unterstützung und Großzügigkeit von Freund\:innen und Menschen vor Ort.

Um meine erste Einzelausstellung umsetzen zu können, bin ich auf Unterstützung angewiesen. Damit möchte ich die Produktionskosten decken, Essen und Getränke aus der Region für eine kleine Vernissage bereitstellen, die eingeladenen Künstler\:innen fair entlohnen — und die Ausstellung mit einer Finissage en beauté abschließen.

Zur Produktion gehören der Druck der Arbeiten, das Anfertigen einer kleinen Edition, eine sorgfältige Rahmung sowie die Vorbereitung für die öffentliche Präsentation. Die Unterstützung ermöglicht mir, diese Schritte professionell umzusetzen und die Ausstellungssituation experimentell weiterzudenken.

Die Ausstellung findet vom 15. bis 20. Juli statt. In der Mitte der Woche ist eine kollaborative Musikperformance geplant — und vielleicht eine weitere zum Abschluss der Finissage.
