Constructed in 1853 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, Virginia’s Chapel ("The Old Brick Church") holds deep historical and cultural significance for Kanawha County. During the Civil War, the building served as both a hospital and stable, and in the years that followed, it became a place of worship and community gatherings for generations. It is the original site from which both Cedar Grove United Methodist Church (now closed) and Glasgow United Methodist Church were formed.

Today, the chapel stands at a critical point. Years of aging and exposure have led to significant structural concerns that need to be addressed very soon to preserve the building and ensure safety of those visiting the chapel. The most urgent need is the repair and reconstruction of the steeple, which has sustained extensive water damage, wood rot, and is in danger of collapse.

The Virginia’s Chapel Foundation is seeking funding assistance in the amount of $42,000, which will be used for the following restoration priorities:
  • $35,000 – Steeple Repair and Reconstruction (addressing structural instability and preventing collapse)
  • $4,500 – Interior and Exterior Painting and Plaster Repair
  • $2,500 – Gutter and Downspout Replacement to Properly Manage Water and Prevent Further Damage

Our goal is not only to preserve this historic structure, but to restore it as a vibrant community resource. Once stabilized and repaired, Virginia’s Chapel will serve as a venue for weddings, community events, educational opportunities, and historical tourism – benefiting both local residents and the broader Kanawha County community.

With your support, we can protect this irreplaceable landmark and ensure it continues to serve future generations. Thank you for being part of this important journey!
