Punta Tortuga Wildlife Conservation is an Ecuadorian non-profit organization dedicated to marine conservation. We are seeking funding to help save sea turtles, build a sea turtle hospital and secure vital nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles. With your donation you will be not only saving sea turtles, but helping to secure a future for this non-profit organization so that it can continue to protect one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.
The beaches of Punta Tortuga are critical nesting grounds for four species of endangered sea turtles. Tragically, many adult sea turtles arrive injured—entangled in fishing nets, harmed by pollution, or struck by boats. This project was born to change this reality, inspired by all these creatures whose lives are tragically cut short due to injuries caused by human activities.
We aim to save sea turtles but also to create a refuge for other vulnerable wildlife species from the surrounding Choco rainforest, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. This forest is home to countless species threatened by loss of habitat due to deforestation, such as howler monkeys, ocelots, sloths and toucans, amongst many others. Sadly, every year, many of these animals are displaced from their homes and found injured or in poor health, requiring urgent care.
Our Mission and Goals
Our mission is clear: to protect endangered sea turtles, restore critical habitats, and provide care for displaced wildlife while empowering local communities to lead conservation efforts, especially through educational programs for local children and youth.
We aim to raise $175,000, amount that will allow us to:
- Purchase 1.1 hectares of tropical rainforest land with access to a critical nesting beach, in order to prevent tourism development and protect a vital area for sea turtles.
- Build a rehabilitation center on this land to provide medical care for sea turtles and other wildlife, ensuring they can recover and return to their natural habitats.
- Develop an educational center to provide conservation-focused training for local children and youth.
- Cover essential operational costs to ensure the long-term success of the project.
These funds will enable us to create a safe haven for wildlife, protect an irreplaceable ecosystem, and foster a culture of conservation in one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth.
Extended Goals and Expanded Vision
If we surpass our goal of $175,000, additional funds will be used to:
- Enhance the sea turtle rehabilitation center with improved additional equipment, like an x-ray machine.
- Install sustainable energy systems to avoid energy cuts and to reduce the project’s ecological footprint.
- Implement a scientific laboratory to deepen our knowledge of the region’s species and ecosystems.
- Expand conservation efforts to protect more critical habitats and empower local communities through job-generating training programs.
- Acquire an ATV vehicle to patrol additional nesting beaches, protect sea turtle nests, and rescue injured turtles, in currently inaccessible areas.
