Thank you all for your generosity! Having exceeded our goal, we have closed this fundraiser for Ann's ledger stone. However, if you'd like to support the efforts at St. Matthews Churchyard--including maintenance of so many important Ann Walker related items--please go to https://www.lightcliffechurchyard.org.uk/
For several years we have tried to get permission to install a ledger stone for Ann Walker in St Matthews Churchyard, which has been a closed churchyard for years. Ann was buried within the church in the vault with her two aunts, under the pulpit. The church was demolished in the 1970s, leaving only the tower.
We have now been granted permission to do so.
The flat ledger stone will be made of local Yorkshire stone and be 44” wide and 36” from top to bottom. It will be 6” thick and be set at ground level. It will have the names of Ann and her aunts carved in the same style as others buried nearby at the same period, such as Lydia Wilkinson who was at Cliffe Hill when Ann died.
Incidentally, the stone will be similar to that used as the backing for Ann’s plaque in the tower.
Mary Walker 1747-1822
Ann Walker 1757-1847
Ann Walker 1803-1854
Rest in Peace
In the custom of the time, these three women were buried in the same vault. The lettering for the names will be approximately 2 1/ 2 “ high and slightly less for the dates.
This page has been created to raise the funds to purchase this ledger stone. All monies will be passed on by Pat Esgate to the Friends of St Matthew’s Churchyard to purchase, install and maintain the ledger stone. Any money raised above the target will be donated to Friends of Saint Matthews Churchyard for their work.
This is a joint effort by Friends of Saint Matthews Churchyard, In Search of Ann Walker and ALBW. Please consider a donation today so Ann Walker and her aunts can be properly honored.
PLEASE NOTE: The $3500 amount requested in US dollars is based on the exchange rate for 2700 GBP (Great Britain Pound) as listed in the description.
