During his 21 years as a faculty member in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University, Dan was an intellectual leader in the area of counter-publics theory and public memory, an award-winning teacher and mentor, and founder and co-director of the I-4C Collective -- a vibrant and active consortium of students and faculty focused on the intersections of civil, critical, and creative communication. He was a fundamental figure in creating and sustaining the annual NCA Queer No Host celebration, and his capacity to be present as only he could be, helped each person who was fortunate enough to have him in their lives find dignity, strength, joy, and purpose in their own existence.
As an accomplished scholar and social justice activist, Dan was one of the most prolific doctoral mentors, working with more than 60 graduate students on their dissertations and theses, usually as chair or-co-chair. Dan’s intellect, mentoring, and activism have left an indelible mark on the communication discipline and will continue to do so for generations to come.
For those of us fortunate enough to have Dan in our lives, his unique capacity to be present helped us find dignity, strength, joy, and purpose. GoFundMe donations will honor this legacy by helping to build a new endowment in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication where he worked for 21 years. Its purpose will recognize and support student mentoring, commemorating the extraordinary impact that Dan had during his precious time with us.
