A KIDNEY FOR LEI

Born with Chronic Kidney Disease, Lei has been fighting the same battle her entire life. After watching her family members face similar issues, she knew this day would come…but as a friend, it is difficult to watch her face these challenges, especially while her children are still school-aged.

Currently on dialysis, Lei’s kidneys are only functioning at 4% and she is in need of a kidney transplant. Her medical staff is in the process of looking for a viable kidney, but they have asked her to search for a donor on her own to improve her chances. Her family members are undergoing testing to see if they are a match, but due to their own health conditions, it is unlikely that they will be approved to donate.

Identified as high-risk, Lei was able to stay home safely for a short period of time during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic; but as a result of being “absent” from her job duties, her workplace hired someone new for her position and decided to let her go (regardless of her doctor's letters to her workplace). Now she faces her medical situation with the added stress of trying to figure out how to pay day to day expenses for her and her children.

My friend Lei is sweet, caring, and extremely humble. She is a friend that you can call any time of the day—for support, for help, for fun…for anything. She is a loving and caring mother, who has a strong bond with her children and would do absolutely anything for her family and friends. She is a good hearted and free spirit, and the way her medical condition represses that truly is ironic. How is it that one of the kindest people I’ve ever known, wakes up every morning with the anxiety of not knowing whether she will live another day?

We are asking for your help with two things:

1. Finding a O+ kidney donor
2. Monetary donations

All donations will be used toward living expenses for Lei and her ‘ohana, such as rent and groceries, and toward covering copayments for Lei’s medical expenses, including dialysis treatments and medications, as well as the costs associated with the kidney transplant itself.

Lei has overcome adversity in many different forms throughout her life, some of which is not my place to say. However, I will say that she has been a survivor time and time again... So please, let’s help her survive this.
