A Kidney for Kellie
Donation protected
Friends,
As you may know, Kellie was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease 11 years ago, and her Kidney function has rapidly declined in the past year. She is currently at Stage 4 renal failure. Because this disease also causes aneurisms and heart disease, Many sufferers of PKD pass away while waiting for a transplant.
Kellie has completed her testing through the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and was accepted to their transplant program. Amy is headed to Mayo on February 18-23rd to undergo comprehensive medical testing for qualification to donate her kidney to her sister. Since Kellie and Amy are siblings and they share the same blood type, doctors are optimistic that she will flourish with one of Amy's kidneys though we won't know for sure until all the testing is complete.
If Kellie and Amy are not a direct match, they will be entered into the Paired Donation program, also called paired kidney exchange. A paired exchange matches two pairs of living kidney donors and transplant candidates who do no not have matching blood types. The two candidates “trade” donors so that each candidate receives a kidney from a donor with a compatible blood type.
While the surgery itself is covered by Insurance, any and all expenses (travel, hotel, food) incurred to both Kellie, Amy and their caregivers are not covered. Kellie is required to be in Arizona for 6 weeks post-surgery, and then return 4 times in the calendar year. Amy's stay will last 11 days.
While Kellie and Amy won't ask for help themselves, there is great need for any help you can provide. Amy and Kellie sincerely appreciate any help you can offer.
