A Kidney for Chase

Donation protected
My name is Kristie McKillip and I’m raising money to support my best friend, Heather Best and her husband Chase Best in paying their medical bills from Chase’s heartbreaking kidney failure, dialysis treatments and all medical expenses necessary for a kidney transplant, which he still desperately needs!

Let me tell you Chase’s story. Chase is a 36 year-old, father of four to Gavin 18, Drew 17, Brinley 10 and his beloved dog, Opie. He is always smiling and always has a good attitude, despite his condition. Chase was diagnosed at a young age with a rare disease that required regular medication that destroyed his kidneys.  He has been battling this his entire adult life and has been working hard to extend functionality of his kidneys for years.  Despite all of his efforts and hard work, as the doctors predicted, Chase experienced kidney failure in early January and had to have emergency ports placed for dialysis and spent several days in the hospital. Though there have been some amazingly brave and selfless individuals who have raised their hands to be a kidney donor, it is an extremely complex, difficult and long process to ensure 100% match, compatibility and success rate for both Chase and the donor.  In fact, we thought Chase was soon to be scheduled for a transplant from a perfect match donor, but after final testing and scans, it was revealed there could be risks and the medical board that approves transplant procedures turned it down. In the meantime, Chase has already started dialysis. His first dialysis treatments have come in at over $35,000. Heather and Chase have insurance and are pursuing Medicare as an option, but ultimately, the out of pocket expenses are still overwhelming. Beyond his expenses in the here and now, if Chase does receive a kidney (prayers needed here), he will be unable to work for several months after the transplant due to his job being a high risk factor of infection. Needless to say, the financial headwinds for Heather and Chase are only going to get worse.

I asked Heather if I could start this fundraiser.  She was hesitant at first, but then admitted that Chase’s biggest worry is how to pay for it all, and still provide for his family while he is recovering from the  transplant.  My goal in this fundraiser is to eliminate this as a stress
for Chase and Heather and raise enough money to cover their out of pocket medical expenses that are racking up and that will rack up even more if Chase receives a transplant.  Please help me support my best friend, Chase and their family as they endure what none of us would ever want to go through. Prayers are always welcome and please keep them coming. In addition to prayer, if you have any money at all to spare (even if it’s just $5) to help them pay medical bills, they will be forever grateful! Please help me ease one of Chase’s worries so that he can focus solely on recovering!

Though my primary objective here is to raise money to help cover their medical bills, and I hope everyone who reads this donates something, I cannot let an opportunity pass without once again providing information for anyone who is interested in being a donor.  To learn more about the kidney donation process and how to help Chase, you can call Maddy Luther, his transplant coordinator at [phone redacted].  Chase is O- blood type and can accept a kidney from someone with O- or O+ blood type.  Even if you are not a match for Chase, but still interested in kidney donation for another person in need, you can also call Maddy for information about a paired donation or paired kidney exchange.

Finally, if you are hesitant to donate online for any reason and you want to send money the old fashioned way through the mail, please send your donations directly to Chase and Heather Best at 1295 Harrison Ave., Corydon, IN 47112.  With the exception of very minimal admin/processing fees to use the online platform, all proceeds from this fundraiser will go to Chase and Heather.  Please join me and help ease their financial burden so that Chase can focus on staying healthy and strong!  Please share this whether you can donate or not.
