Help quadriplegic recover from tragic car accident

My name is Carerinena Te, and I am creating this GoFundMe for my dear friend, Jeremy Blocksom. Jeremy is 43 years old, a loving father of two, and one of the kindest, most generous people anyone could hope to meet. In 2022, a work-related accident changed his life forever, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down and only able to move his head. Since then, he has relied on a custom power wheelchair, a fully adapted handicap-accessible van, and devoted caretakers just to get through each day.

On December 17th, Jeremy, along with his caretakers Tara and Doris, was involved in a catastrophic 100‑vehicle pileup on Highway 2, just north of Calgary in Airdrie, Alberta. The accident was caused by poor road conditions, poor visibility, and another 50‑vehicle pileup just a few kilometres ahead on the same highway.

You can see the news coverage of this devastating accident here:

CTV News Report: 80 to 100 Car Pileup Closes Highway 2It(https://www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/article/80-to-100-car-pileup-closes-highway-2-between-airdrie-and-calgary-as-winter-storm-wallops-alberta) is nothing short of a miracle that they all survived. Jeremy suffered a broken arm and a broken shoulder, and both Tara and Doris were also injured. They now need time off to recover, leaving Jeremy without the full-time care he depends on every minute of every day. Right now, he cannot be left alone, so my boyfriend(Darrel Hokanson) and I have stepped in to help care for him as best as we can along side his other dedicated caretakers, Tara, Abilene, and Doris.

In that terrifying chain of events, the little independence Jeremy had worked so hard to hold on to was shattered. His specialty handicap-accessible van (about $80,000) and his custom power wheelchair (about $25,000) were both damaged beyond repair. For most people, a vehicle and a chair are things they use; for Jeremy, they are his legs, his freedom, and his connection to his children and the outside world. Without them, he is completely dependent, unable to get to medical appointments, see his kids, or do even the simplest things most of us take for granted.

Jeremy already faces enormous monthly costs just to survive. Between caretakers and medical care, his expenses are around $50,000 every month. Adding the sudden loss of his van and wheelchair on top of this is overwhelming and impossible for him to shoulder alone. He has been through so much, and even with everything he has faced, he still just wants what so many of us want: to live as normal and dignified a life as possible.

There is also a quiet hero in this story. During the pileup, a semi-truck driver noticed the handicap sticker on Jeremy’s van. In a split-second act of courage and compassion, that driver jackknifed the truck and trailer to shield Jeremy’s van from the oncoming chaos behind them. If it weren’t for that decision, Jeremy, Tara, and Doris might not be here with us today, and our gratitude to this driver is beyond words.

This fundraiser is Jeremy’s best hope at rebuilding what has been taken from him. Your generosity will help:Replace his custom power wheelchair (approx. 25,000 dollars)Replace his fully adapted handicap-accessible van (approx. 80,000 dollars)Support caretaker and medical costs (approx. 50,000 dollars per month) while Tara and Doris heal and his care schedule is rebuiltProvide some stability for Jeremy and his two children as they try to move forward from yet another devastating event in their livesIf you would like to learn more about Jeremy and follow his journey, you can find him on Facebook at “A Journey with Jeremy”, where he shares more of his story, his challenges, and his hopes.

Jeremy is not asking for luxuries. He is asking for the basic tools he needs to live with dignity, to be present for his kids, and to feel even a small sense of independence again. Right now, that has been taken from him, and he cannot get it back without help.

If you are able to donate, any amount truly helps—5 dollars, 20 dollars, 100 dollars—every bit brings Jeremy closer to getting his life back. If you cannot donate, sharing this GoFundMe means more than you know. Every share is a chance for someone else to see Jeremy’s story and choose to help.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for taking the time to read about Jeremy, for caring about a man who has already endured so much, and for standing with him and his children during this incredibly difficult time. Your kindness is giving him more than equipment—you are giving him hope, safety, and a chance to feel human again.
