A Hopeful Future: Lunda and Sathi's Education

You don't choose love, it chooses you.

Chris was an orphan at a children's home in Cape Town where I volunteered in the late 1990s, early 2000s. He had survived a horrific fire that left him disfigured, and necessitated many months of hospitalizations and multiple, excruciatingly painful operations. From the moment I met him when he was 11 years old, I knew that this boy was special – from his shy smile to his curiosity about the world, undiminished by his extreme suffering, he was full of life, and he stole my heart...

With the help from local donors, I was able to enroll Chris in a good school where he caught up on the missed years of education. Later, he attended college, and eventually found a job with an insurance company.

A few years ago he met the love of his life, Khanya, and together they had two children - first Lunda, who is now six, and then Sathi, who is three.

But life can be brutal, fragile and short. And on 17th of December 2023 Chris died at the age of 34 after a short illness. The wonderful, caring man with a soft laugh, who, as a boy, chose to call me his mother, is now gone. He left behind his precious children and his beloved partner.

And what Chris wanted most of all for his children was for them to go to a good school. Education in South Africa is not free, and to honour his memory, I would like to ensure that Chris’s wishes are fulfilled.
