A Home For Rosette & Moses (Please Read)

I invite you to become part of this meaningful story which is 30 years in the making!

In 1994 I first visited Kibaale, Uganda for 2 months as part of a school program and my heart was forever broken open for all those in need.

It started with Rosette. I rode in the back of a pick up truck for what seemed like hours, (getting out to push the truck through the slick, red mud in my bare feet several times) until we ended up at a little brick home, where a small girl stood outside in a blue dress. She was my student, whom I had chosen to sponsor. We walked to the back of the house and were shown where her parents were buried, amongst the banana trees. They died of AIDS, as did so many of that generation in Uganda. This was the beginning of a particular growth of empathy in me which continues to break my heart in all the best ways.

I continued to sponsor Rosette until she left school in Kibaale, and another student took her place, but I never forgot her.

In 2016, I returned to Uganda with my husband and kids, who were then in Grade 7 & 8 respectively. I asked around the community whether anyone knew of Rosette. To my delight someone DID! And she came to visit by boda boda (motorcycle taxi) with her LITTLE BOY! I don’t know if she or I were more delighted to see the other. I could tell she got really dressed up for the occasion. I had brought some treats for her son. But I just felt like it wasn’t enough. I took her email address.

Back home in Canada, I began to email Rosette. She was moving to a new town. We talked about our lives and sent pictures back and forth. She PRAYED for me in my sickness and I learned from her faith. I have been able to help pay for her son’s school since 2021.

The last year has been very tragic for Rosette. She was diagnosed with HIV. This carries a heavy burden of shame in Uganda and she contemplated suicide, but decided to stay for her son. She earns money by selling porridge at a roadside stand. When she got behind on rent, she became homeless and had to send her son to live with a relative.

My mom & dad back-paid her rent which was so little money in Canadian but the world to her. And now we’ve come to a new opportunity to help.

An elder at the church in Uganda has purchased some land for Rosette to build a small brick house on. She has gotten a quote from a builder who will build a brick house and latrine for CAD $3147. It costs a bit to send the money, and GoFundMe takes a cut. In addition we would love her to have enough for a couple of beds & mosquito nets, maybe a bike.

Therefore, Kevin & I have set a fundraising goal of $3000, and we ourselves have an additional $1000 to contribute, bringing the total amount given to Rosette to $4000.

If 60 people could give $50, we would cover our fundraising goal!! If we can’t raise it all via GoFundMe, we will look at some other avenues of fundraising as well.

Would you be willing to donate up to $50 to help Rosette & Moses have a small brick home of their own?
