Our rescue roosters need their own house. Help us build it!
My mother runs an animal shelter in France on her own. She has three groups of rescue roosters, and a lot of her day goes into keeping them safely apart, on top of everything else the farm needs.
We need €400 to give one group their own little house, somewhere else on the land. That gives Tokkeltje, one of the roosters, and his hens their own peaceful spot, the others get more room.
A few years ago my mother moved from the Netherlands to France, to give animals a better life
Horses neglected by the sport, she heals. Cats that get dumped on the road, or as Dutch farmers put it, the ones headed "under the clog," she gives a new home. Or a farmer calls to ask if she wants the roosters, because otherwise they go to slaughter. She would rather give them a home. She does all of this on her own. No team, no salary, no days off. Every single day. Honestly, I don't always know how she keeps going, but she does.
Roosters need their own group and their own space
This many together only works with separate houses. They can share the big meadow for a while, but not for long. Without separation, fights don't stop until one stops crowing. We don't want that.
That's where our three groups of rescue roosters are right now. So my mother keeps them apart by hand. One group out, the next in, rotating, watching. She knows them by name, cuddles them every day, keeps them safe. But it takes hours, every single day, on top of all the other farm work she does alone.
A separate house fixes that. Tokkeltje, one of the roosters, and his hens get what every rooster needs: their own patch, their own peaceful group. The other rescue roosters get more room too. And my mother gets her hours back. We want to give them a nice coop that she can easily put together herself, because she takes care of all the animals on her own. And time is scarce.
Where every euro goes
We need €400:
- Rooster house (~210 cm): €150
- Run, 16 m²: €170
- Bedding, water bowls, small extras: €50
- GoFundMe transaction fees: €30
The money goes straight to materials. The moment we hit the goal, she orders. Every step gets shared on Instagram: delivery, assembly, the first roosters moving in. You'll see exactly where your money went.
A word from my mother
"Dear friends, These roosters are cuddly, soft, and get a hug every single day. Roosters are sweet, believe me. But this many roosters together only works if each group has its own little house. They can share the big meadow for a while, but not for long. After a while they start to fight, and they don't stop until one of them stops crowing. We don't want that. We want them safe. Will you help give them a real home?"
About the foundation
Stichting Hearts for Horses is the Dutch foundation my mother works through. The little roosters and chickens are a growing part of her work, and this campaign is specifically for them.
Want to chip in?
Help her buy the house, so Tokkeltje has his own spot and our rescue roosters get the peace they deserve. Any amount helps. €5, €10, €20. We just need to reach €400. Or please share this page with someone who would care.
Save on tax when you donate
Our foundation, Hearts for Horses, is a registered ANBI (a recognised charity under Dutch tax law), RSIN 854838132. That means your donation is tax-deductible. For the Dutch rules, see the Belastingdienst page on deducting gifts. Donating from another country? Check your own government's website.
