A Home for David and Jasmine!

Our local Nextdoor neighborhood first heard of David and his 14-year-old daughter Jasmine on April 6, 2019, when they became homeless and were living and sleeping in their car in the Salmon Creek Fred Meyer parking lot. David sent out a cry for help and the neighbors responded!

David was given a bit of gas and food money, he and his daughter were put up in a hotel for a couple of nights at a time, while another neighbor dug in to his situation to figure out whether he was legit and whether we could help him get into the apartment he’d been working toward (with assistance from his Salvation Army case worker). David was very transparent about his ongoing efforts, classes, discussions with community organizations, etc. Everything he shared about his situation matched conversations she had with his case workers, potential new apartment complex, the collection agency, and other social services organizations he had worked with for the past year.

The biggest roadblock to their getting the apartment was a past-due eviction amount of $3,800 that went to collections when he lost his job in 2017. New housing was not possible if that wasn't paid first.

David just started a new job as a cook at Applebee’s and he is looking for a second job. He has diligently worked to access other help through the Salvation Army, Lighthouse Home Center, Council for the Homeless, Share House, Vancouver Schools’ VCRC program, his church, various shelters, etc. These organizations have helped tremendously with other needed resources, but none can help pay the $3,800. The collection agency wouldn’t work out a payment plan. He couldn’t get into the new apartment without this bill being paid in full and they could only hold it for 24 hours. We had to act fast!

So on April 11, 2019, the neighbor who started this GoFundMe page and her husband invited David and his daughter to stay in their home so they now have food and a roof over their heads. The couple decided to put the $3,800 past due collections amount on their credit card so it is paid in full, and now David and his daughter should be in their new apartment around April 19. The roadblock is gone!

Now what? The neighborhood again stepped up to help defray this cost and asked for this GoFundMe page to facilitate donations! The first $3,800 will go toward repaying this advance, and anything over that will go to David and his daughter to get them on their feet in the new apartment.

Thank you all so much for your generosity! David and his daughter have been humbled and are so very thankful about everyone who has shown them kindness during this tough time!
