A Home For Cindy

Donation protected
This is our  sister, Cindy.  When she was 9 years old, both  she and my other sister,Linda were  hit by a car. Both were seriously injured , but Cindy suffered catastrophic injuries, a brain injury and paralysis on the left side of her body.  ,In 2013, Cindy and my mom moved to Atlanta and lived in a  assisted living facility that Linda found .  Sadly, my mother passed from cancer in 2015.

The problem

After our mom passed, Cindy needed more care than the assisted living center could provide, so at first they kept her so heavily sedated that hospice was recommended.  Linda and I fought this and ultimately had Cindy transferred to the personal care home she resides at now.  She is doing well there. Linda and I go weekly to visit and make sure Cindy gets the care she needs.

Why she has to move

Cindy has been in the personal care home on private pay, but she was relying on a small social security check and an inheritance from our mother, which has now been depleted.  Since she no longer has savings and now qualifies for Medicaid, We  have been searching the Atlanta Metro Area for a Medicaid approved nursing home that can meet her needs.

In two instances, I called the facility asking if they had any long-term female Medicaid beds available and she replied, “yes”. I went to the facility to take a tour and proceeded to send in the paper work and the receptionists called to tell me that there were no beds available. I attempted several times to reach the administrators to ask why my sister was rejected and they refused to respond.

Why we need help

Some suitable facilities have waiting lists and my sister is on 6 of them. I’m going this week to meet with two administrators to plead my sisters’ case in hopes that she can be placed. I will meet with them but must reach out every week to see if there is an availability. Last week, I visited a nursing home that is willing to take my sister. Linda and Iwere devasted. The facility was horrible.  We are trying to make sure that  Cindy continues to live in a clean facility and gets good care.

What the money will be used for

It costs $2500 a month above her current Social Security income to keep Cindy in the home she is in until we get her in a new, Medicaid approved home.

On my public school teacher’s salary, I have very little extra income available to help.  Working with a social worker, we expect to find something for her within the next 4-6 months.  If we could raise $10,000 in donations, Cindy would be able to stay in her current home for another 4 months while I continue to look for suitable housing.

Anything you could contribute would be greatly appreciated.
Love,
Cindy, Linda  & Bran
