A Home for Akash and Sushma

Donation protected
We are raising money to help Akash Thool build a home for his family in Wardha, India.

My wife, Emily, and I met Akash in the spring of 2013 when we brought a group of students from Carnegie Mellon University to Wardha, India. A teenage orphan raised by his grandmother, Akash impressed all of us with his sense of humor, passion for education, and determination to improve himself and his life. He had the habit of learning as much English vocabulary as possible: one day a student taught him the word "dashing," and the next day he greeted everyone, "You are looking dashing today!"

Pursuing His Dreams

Since 2013, Akash has worked hard to achieve his dreams. He secured a job with a local foundation that helps poor farmers conserve resources and escape poverty. Last year, he got married. Here is Akash and his wife, Sushma, on their wedding day:

For years, Akash saved small amounts of money with the goal of buying a small plot of land. Last year, he was able to achieve that dream. Here is the plot of land where Akash and Sushma hope to build their home:

A Helping Hand

In Wardha, a modest home costs only 250,000 rupees, or $3800. I verified this figure with the office manager of a local nonprofit organization, who also offered to help ensure that a trustworthy local contractor is hired to build the home.

Akash and Sushma have both come from poor families and have worked hard to build a better future for themselves. Giving them a home will allow them to focus their resources on their family's future.
