A Historical Marker for Rep. Abram Colby

Donation protected
I am Mamie Lee Hillman and I am the Founder/Director of the Greene County African American Museum, Inc., in Greensboro, Georgia. We are organizing this GoFundMe to assist in the acquisition of a Historical Marker for Representative Abram Colby (1820-1872). Representative Colby was one of Georgia's "Original 33" African American legislators elected during Reconstruction. Upon arriving at Georgia's Capitol to take their oath of office and seats, these representatives were informed by their colleagues that they would be "EXPELLED BECAUSE OF COLOR." Their lives and those of their families were never the same. All they desired was to serve their communities and their people. As we continue to acknowledge, honor, celebrate, and unearth the historical narrative of Abram Colby, we must also put in place a reminder of his contributions to Greene County and Georgia.

We have successfully applied for the Georgia Historical Society Marker Program and are receiving matching funds, but we must still raise $2,500 for the marker itself and installation. We all have this great opportunity to actively engage in birthing truth and validation of the contributions of Representative Abram Colby.
