A Hero—And an Author—Need Your help!
With your funding, a new hero can take flight for young readers!
The Hero: Ultra Bear, rescuers of animals around the globe!
The Author: Linda Parker Hamilton
Ultra Bear (He/him) and his sidekick, Ralph the Squirrel (She/her) save animals all over the world, overcoming obstacles and having a lot of fun doing it. In each book, young readers, along with our superheroes, learn about a new animal and its ecosystem, geography, conservation, and a little about themselves.
Side by side with the lovingly illustrated story are Fun Facts, Jokes, Games, and Activities that kids (and their teachers and parents) love.
The Ultra Bear Adventure book series is endorsed by the Conservation Society of California (The Oakland Zoo ) and will be promoted and distributed throughout their network of accredited zoos and aquariums and conservation societies.
I can’t tell you how excited I am about this project!
Why do I need your financial support?
Children are an amazing readership to write for, intuitive, honest, eager to learn, but with many competing activities in their lives. It’s humbling in the best possible way! So, I need help to develop my stories to the excellence they require.
My talented artist-partner, Julie Bayless , and I are fortunate to have both an agent and a publishing house interested in seeing Ultra Bear as a finished product!
Your money will allow me to:
· Work with Mary Kole , an experienced children’s book editor
· Commission more illustrations from Julie
· Craft a killer book proposal
· Build the beginnings of the website and social media presence that will support the project
Donor Gifts:
At any amount, any level, you have my deep gratitude!
I would like to provide you with a gift as well at these levels:
$100—a signed book
$500—a signed book and Ultra Bear t-shirt
$1,000—A signed book, Ultra Bear t-shirt, and lunch with the author
$2,000—A signed book, Ultra Bear t-shirt, lunch with the author, and author book reading with a group of your choice
The back story…Once Upon a Time…
The Ultra Bear stories started as bedtime tales for my children. As my boys became readers, they told me, “Mom, you’ve got to write these books!” Then at a Rotary Brown Bag luncheon in the Oakland Zoo’s new California Trail (You have to ride the gondola up and see it!), hosted by the zoo’s CEO and longtime director Dr. Joel Parrott, I watched the giant grizzly bear cubs eat and play together while a local squirrel sat on the fence line watching. I realized with excitement that I was seeing Ultra Bear and his family in the flesh!
The back story of Ultra Bear now mirrors Oakland zoo’s bears, where you’ll find two sets of twin brown bears that adapted to their new zoo home after being orphaned in Alaska when their mothers were killed as “nuisance bears.” You’ll have to read the books to find out how the cub ended up with super powers! And which of the grizzlies is Ultra Bear. (He has to keep up his secret identity after all!)
What comes next?
When the Ultra Bear book series is out in the world, with up to two new books per year and promotional tours and school visits, that is just the beginning!
I’ve already started work on a middle grade novel that goes deeper into the back story of Ultra Bear and the other characters, including vet assistant Esperanza Tierra Rodriguez, the only human who knows our hero’s powers and helps to treat some of the injured animals.
I have plans to take Ultra Bear on-screen in an interactive website and animated series. At that point, we’ll likely have a big and wonderful fundraising event to take Ultra Bear there. You’re invited!
Thinking Big
One of my inspirations for this project is William Penn Mott Jr. Decades ago, he preserved literally millions of acres of parkland and habitat in his positions as director of Oakland parks, East Bay Regional Parks, California State Parks, and the National Park Service. He also hired Dr. Parrott, who took our zoo from cement enclosures to a model zoo and conservation society. Mott would often say to people who sought his advice on their own projects, “You’re not thinking big enough! Don’t be afraid to think big.”
So, with many deep breaths, I’m going for it. I believe in this project. Entertaining, hands-on, and educational, I hope to encourage curiosity and a new generation of stewards of our earth and its ecosystems.
Through the practice of awareness and care of our animals, we have the opportunity to learn about one another, ourselves, and the power of kindness. You could say that by saving animals, we save ourselves.
Ultra Bear and Ralph the Squirrel to the rescue!
Thank you so much for your support!
Linda
