Hello, I’m Denise Barillas.

I live with short bowel syndrome and a permanent ileostomy. After years of hospitalizations and over 25 surgeries they removed most of my intestine, and I now depend on medications, supplements, and specialized nutrition to keep living and working.

For years I’ve fought to remain independent, making the most of every day to work, create, and be with the people I love. Recently, I lost my stable job and, though I’ve taken a temporary one that covers the basics, my medical expenses — equipment, medications, supplements, and maintenance — go far beyond what I can afford right now.

Asking for help isn’t easy, but today I do so because I need to restock the essentials and avoid a relapse that could send me back to the hospital. Any contribution, no matter how small, will allow me to maintain my treatment and regain the strength I need to keep working on projects that will give me independence.

Funds will be used to restock ostomy bags, skin care (ostomy related problems) powder, paste and rings, dietary supplements such as vitamins, specialized minerals and enteral nutrition (Ensure), and medicine that I must take permanently and if we reach the goal, it should cover at least 4 months of all these needs.

Hola, soy Denise Barillas. Vivo con síndrome de intestino corto y una ileostomía permanente; tras años de hospitalizaciones y más de 25 visitas al quirófano, me quitaron gran parte del intestino, y dependo de medicamentos, suplementos, nutrición especializada y equipo médico para seguir viviendo y trabajando.

He luchado por ser independiente durante años y sigo aprovechando cada día para trabajar, crear y estar con la gente que quiero. Recientemente me quedé sin empleo estable y, aunque tengo un trabajo temporal que ayuda con lo básico, los costos médicos —equipo, medicinas, suplementos (como el Ensure) y mantenimiento— superan lo que puedo cubrir ahorita.

Pedir ayuda no es fácil para mí, pero hoy lo hago pues necesito reabastecer lo esencial y así evitar una recaída que me lleve de nuevo al hospital. Cualquier aporte, por pequeño que sea, me permitirá mantener mi tratamiento y recuperar energía para seguir trabajando en proyectos que me den independencia.

Los fondos se utilizarán para comprar bolsas de ostomía, productos para el cuidado de la piel (problemas relacionados con la ostomía y quemaduras) como polvo, pasta y anillos, suplementos alimenticios como vitaminas, minerales especializados y nutrición enteral (Ensure), así como la medicación que debo tomar de forma permanente. Si alcanzamos la meta, debería cubrir al menos 4 a 5 meses de todas estas necesidades.
