A Helping Hand for Yony (Jhonny) Higuera

Hi, our names are Ellen and Hannah and we are fundraising for a dear friend, Yony Higuera.

Yony and his beloved wife, Luz Marie, came to Rochester from Bogotá, Colombia, a year and a half ago to work and send money home to their family. We met them when looking to hire someone to paint and do odd jobs for a family home. Friends of ours knew Yony and Luz were just over from Bogotá and in need of work, so they connected us. Not only did Yony have an amazing work ethic, but the biggest heart. Our families connected so much so that Yony and Luz started coming to birthday and holiday celebrations at our family homes.

If you’ve been lucky enough to meet Yony, you have certainly felt the warmth of his smile and the strength of his character. And the love he holds for his beautiful Luz Marie is incredible.

While roofing the other day, Yony fell three stories to the ground. He is now in the ICU at Strong Hospital— paralyzed from the waist down, but finally breathing on his own and using his left hand to communicate. The doctors said they were not sure he would walk again and, if he is able to, it will be a long and difficult process. But Yony is strong and will no doubt work with every fiber of his being to recover.

Yony and Luz do not have insurance; they do not speak English; and they are here on temporary visas. We are concerned not only about the medical expenses, but about their financial well-being both for now and the unforeseeable future.

And seeing how Yony earns the majority of income for himself and Luz, the concern is heavy and immediate.

We want Luz Marie to focus on Yony’s recovery and not on the financial unknown. We want Yony to focus on his recovery and not on the so many what-ifs yet to come from this terrifying situation.

We are certain Yony will pull through because he’s never met a job he couldn’t finish.

Each of you, reading this, has known the angst of the unknown. Hopefully all of you have gotten by with a little help from your friends.

We’re asking, whether you know Yony or not, to lend us your hand and give a lot of help to our friends.

Hola, nos llamamos Ellen y Hannah y estamos recaudando fondos para una querida amiga, Yony Higuera.

Yony y su amada esposa, Luz Marie, llegaron a Rochester desde Bogotá, Colombia, hace un año y medio para trabajar y enviar dinero a casa a su familia. Los conocimos cuando buscában contratar a alguien para pintar y hacer trabajos ocasionales para una casa familiar. Nuestros amigos sabían que Yony y Luz estaban a poco de Bogotá y necesitaban trabajo, así que nos conectaron. Yony no solo tenía una ética de trabajo increíble, sino también el corazón más grande. Nuestras familias se conectaron tanto que Yony y Luz comenzaron a venir a las celebraciones de cumpleaños y vacaciones en nuestras casas familiares.

Si has tenido la suerte de conocer a Yony, sin duda has sentido la calidez de su sonrisa y la fuerza de su carácter. Y el amor que tiene por su hermosa Luz Marie es increíble.

Mientras techoba el otro día, Yony cayó tres pisos al suelo. Ahora está en la UCI del Hospital Strong, paralizado de la cintura para abajo, pero finalmente respira por su cuenta y usa su mano izquierda para comunicarse. Los médicos dijeron que no estaban seguros de que volvería a caminar y, si puede, será un proceso largo y difícil. Pero Yony es fuerte y sin duda trabajará con cada fibra de su ser para recuperarse.

Yony y Luz no tienen seguro; no hablan inglés; y están aquí con visados temporales. Nos preocupa no solo los gastos médicos, sino también su bienestar financiero tanto por ahora como por el futuro imprevisible.

Y viendo cómo Yony gana la mayor parte de los ingresos para él y Luz, la preocupación es pesada e inmediata.

Queremos que Luz Marie se centre en la recuperación de Yony y no en lo financiero desconocido. Queremos que Yony se centre en su recuperación y no en los tantos que aún no han salido de esta aterradora situación.

Estamos seguros de que Yony saldrá adelante porque nunca ha encontrado un trabajo que no pudiera terminar.

Cada uno de ustedes, al leer esto, ha conocido la angustia de lo desconocido. Espero que todos os hayáis salido bien con un poco de ayuda de vuestros amigos.
