Our dear friend, colleague and fantastic teacher Emma, has been through a scary and sudden health crisis. And with this, we all want to rally around and support her and Matt in the most practical way we can.
On January 18th Emma was suffering severe migraine-like headaches that escalated into needing a CT scan, revealing a bleed on her brain.
She was airlifted to Melbourne with her fiancé Matt and her family by her side. They attempted surgery but were unsuccessful due to excessive swelling. It was later found the cause to be an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM).
Em returned to Bendigo for a short time, to undergo rehabilitation and allow her brain to rest and the swelling to go down. However, on February 1st, Em had a second scare of increased swelling and was rushed back to Melbourne for observations.
On Tuesday 12th February, Emma was finally able to have her brain surgery to repair the bleed. This lasted for over 8 hours, but was deemed a complete success (and to her delight her hair was not shaved in the process!)
Em is expected to make a full recovery after some continued rehabilitation. However, this traumatic experience is made even more stressful with the added weight of mortgage payments, bills and everyday living expenses. While Matt has been an incredible support, by Em’s side every step of the way, this has put a huge financial strain on them, that we don’t want them to bear.
Maiden Gully Primary prides itself on stepping up and supporting our community when they need it the most and now is no different.
Matt and Em have not asked for this help, but they’re appreciative of the support in their time of need. Please donate to allow Matt the time he needs to stay home and support Em’s recovery, without the added pressure of work and financial obligation.
Em will be back to her usual bubbly self, teaching, making her terrariums and being the eco-warrior that she is, but she needs time. And we can help give her that!
Please donate and allow Matt the option of not having to return to work full time and Em to return only when she is fully recovered.
For anyone that knows Emma, knows she would be the first to do the same if the tables were turned! Xx
