It sucks to see someone as generous and as talented as Terry Chouinard brought low just when things were starting to pick up steam. I know he is immensely uncomfortable with the idea of a GoFundMe, because that’s Terry, but I bullied him into it. It’s not like he was making the big bucks as a book artist. He's been trying to make do since his accident...but he won't be able to print for several months, and he's pretty much on his own.
In case you missed it, Terry hit a Gary, Indiana, pothole special on March 26, 2021 while trying to avoid a minefield of other potholes. (Neighbors call the one Terry hit a "professional" and swear it's at the top of the neighborhood repairs list this year.) He flipped over the handlebars of his bike, and broke his humerus (not funny) just above the elbow. He had surgery the next day, and now sports 29 screws.
Frankly, he's lucky he didn't break his neck or get run over by a car. Let me say we're lucky: the world would be less beautiful without Terry and his art, and you know if Terry has a press, you have a press.
March 2023 Update: And the hits keep coming. Almost 1 year to the day of his accident, after months of physical therapy and slow but steady progress turning the printshop into a neighborhood resource, Terry is facing eviction by a deplorable landlord. He has just a couple weeks to pack up a dream—a dream that physically weighs several tons.
Please consider donating to help Terry get back on his feet.
Please consider donating if you believe in holding fast to a dream deferred—a Gary Printworkers Union, a community printshop where Indiana artists can teach, learn, share, create, buy, and sell.
Please get in touch if you have any in-kind donations of packing/cleaning/moving muscle, a vehicle or trailer, or legal expertise.
Funds will be used to cover Terry’s medical, relocation and legal expenses, as well as other bills until he can get resituated and back to health. Any extra will be used to relaunch the dream of a community printshop.
