"Sometimes superheroes reside in the hearts of small children fighting big battles."
That is just what Shalaine Huff and Devin Holland's baby Oliver is, a superhero fighting a big battle.
When Shalaine and Devin found out they were adding a sweet, little soul to this great big world, they were thrilled. Despite the worry around the global pandemic, and Shalaine's own heroism as a RN working the frontlines, they were excited to start this new adventure together as parents. But it didn't take long for even bigger concerns to start to set in. At 6 weeks pregnant, Shalaine ended up in the ER (by herself because of Covid-19 restrictions) with bleeding. She was diagnosed with a threatened miscarriage and subchorionic hemorrhage. The next few weeks were touch and go, but they were finally able to breathe easier around week 9 when their ultrasound showed a healthy little baby. As the weeks progressed, they were given more good news when genetic testing was positive and they learned they were having a little boy, Ollie Bear. At week 14, the bleeding returned, and so did their fears. They chose to stay positive. At 20 weeks Ollie's anatomy scan was scheduled and they were excited to get to see their little bundle of joy wiggling around and thriving. Because of Covid, Shalaine had to attend the rest of her appointment alone. She was by herself when the doctor came in to go over the US findings, they had found something wrong. Oliver's abdominal wall had never fully closed. They would have to wait a full week to see a specialist and find out which type of abdominal wall defect Oliver had, and what medical intervention he would need. They were told at this appointment that Ollie has a large omphalocele, a birth defect in which his entire liver and some of his small bowel is protruding from his belly button and covered by a transparent sac. They spoke with a genetic counselor that day who explained that this type of birth defect can sometimes be associated with multiple genetic abnormalities and other birth defects. They chose to move forward with an amniocentesis for further and more accurate genetic testing, but they would have to wait for the results and set up another appointment with Nationwide Children's Hospital for a fetal MRI and a fetal echocardiogram. Once again, they left a doctor's appointment without all of the answers they needed and filled with worry. Over the next two weeks, they continued to get good news from the amniocentesis. At the appointment for Oliver's echo and MRI, they continued to get good news as the fetal echo showed no congenital heart defects or abnormalities, except for the possibility of a very small hole in the septum. The MRI showed good lung development, proper brain development, and his other organs did not appear to be in distress at that time. The omphalocele had not changed and still contained his liver and bowel. After a full day at Children's they received a call about the final amniocentesis result, which was normal. Finally, a day of some answers, some good news, and some clarity on what to expect. Shalaine will give birth to Oliver at Riverside hospital in Columbus, likely via c-section, and then he will go directly to Nationwide Children's Hospital nearby for surgical management. There, Ollie will spend anywhere from weeks to months in the NICU, until he is well enough to finally go home.
Shalaine has spent her nursing career caring for others, and even now while having a high risk pregnancy during the Covid-19 pandemic, she suits up everyday and goes to work to help others. But now she, Devin and sweet little Ollie Bear need our help. At this time, they are preparing for serious medical bills, a long-term stay in Columbus, as well as travel to and from when Devin returns to work in Athens, Ohio, and loss wages as Shalaine will be unable to work while recovering from her own surgery, staying nearby and visiting everyday with Ollie, and then being his main caregiver when they are able to return home.
Please, if you are able to give, or at least share this fundraiser, we are asking for any little bit that will help this sweet little family. Especially during a time when typical baby showers are not possible, lets shower them and their special little boy with the help they really need.
All funds will go directly to Shalaine, Devin and Oliver.
