My name is Rashita Wilson, and I never imagined I would have to write these words. On June 11, 2026, my son, Dominic Armani McClair, unexpectedly passed away from cardiac arrest at just 18 years old. Dominic had celebrated his 18th birthday on April 25, and he was only one day away from walking across the stage to receive his high school diploma. What should have been one of the proudest moments of our lives has become the most heartbreaking.

Dominic was an amazing young man with a bright future ahead of him. He was intelligent, respectful, kind-hearted, and loved by everyone who knew him. His smile could light up a room, and his presence brought joy to our family and friends. As a mother, I was excited to watch him step into adulthood and pursue his dreams. Instead, I am now faced with the unimaginable task of planning my son’s funeral.

The pain of losing Dominic is overwhelming, especially after the tremendous losses I have endured over the past few years. I have already said goodbye to my aunt who raised me, my nephew, and my brother. Now I am grieving the loss of my child. I find myself asking God why, trying to understand how so much heartbreak can happen to one family. Yet each day, I continue to wake up and do my best to stay strong for my other four children, who are also trying to navigate this devastating loss.

Less than 24 hours after losing my son, I found myself attending his graduation ceremony to accept his diploma on his behalf. It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. As I walked to accept the diploma for Dominic, his counselor embraced me through tears, unable to hide the heartbreak that so many felt over his sudden passing. The room was filled with emotion, and every step reminded me that my son should have been there celebrating this milestone himself. Despite the pain, I remained strong because I know that Dominic would have wanted me to be there, honoring his accomplishment and celebrating the hard work he put into earning that diploma.
