A Hand Up to Rebuild and Reunite

Seven years ago, I moved from Southern California to the Bay Area to help start a small business. My wife at the time and our two daughters stayed in SoCal so she could finish her doctorate and the girls could continue at their magnet academy. The business was growing steadily until COVID-19 hit. Even though we were considered an essential business, the city emptied out, and we never recovered the momentum we had before the shutdown.

In March 2025, I was laid off because my salary was too high. I searched for work in my field, but after months of trying and using up my savings, I decided to move back to Southern California to be closer to my daughters and look for new opportunities. Unfortunately, the jobs I had lined up fell through, and I’ve been living in my car ever since, doing my best to get back on my feet. I had to put my belongings into a storage unit, which is another cost I have to cover, and the place I had lined up to move to also didn’t materialize. It’s been tough to stay presentable for interviews without access to a shower or a computer to update my resume.

I want people to know that I am trying hard to make it out of this rut by myself, but it’s not easy. The industry I work in is struggling as well, and this is the first time in 25 years that I have been unemployed. I’m a hard worker and a committed employee, and I just don’t want my daughters to see me in this situation. I’m reaching out for help because I need support to cover my moving costs, storage fees, find a temporary place to stay, keep up with my car payments and insurance, and afford food and other essentials. I’m not one to ask for help, but I don’t have family or friends nearby, and I know times are hard for many. I’m not looking for a handout—just a hand up. Any support you can offer would mean the world to me as I work to rebuild and be there for my daughters.

Wanted to give everyone an update; I truly appreciate every one of you that took the time to read my story and donate to my cause. Your generosity has moved me to tears. Unfortunately, when it rains it pours. Two days ago, while my car was sitting parked on a street, some inconsiderate driver backed into my car and tore the bumper off. They didn't leave a note and fled the scene. Now I have to get it repaired. As you know, I've been sleeping in my car most nights. This is going to put me in an even more dire position as I will not have any shelter. I upped the goal on the fundraiser to help me with this new added expense. Once again, I thank every person who has reached out me through a donation or by sending encouragement and inspiration.
