George Lawrence Sturtevant was born in 1870 (date of birth unknown) in Matanzas, Cuba to Charles Whitmore Sturtevant and Leonore L. Sturtevant. When he was 10, the family lived in San Francisco. At the age of 19, George was diagnosed with a rare disease called Addison's Disease. Charles and Leonore bought a house in Berkeley, CA, with thoughts that George needed a large spacious house with lots of fresh air to improve his condition.
Addison's Disease is an incurable disorder in which adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones. During the 1880s, this disease was considered new and unknown. Since the family was well-known in their community, news of George's illness became a popular news-worthy item. Charles and Leonore were so worried about the publicity their son was getting that they hired guards to protect George as he laid sick in their house.
In 1891, George passed away at the age of 21. The family continued to hire guards to protect George’s body during the funeral because of the family’s fear of him being stolen for scientific research. George was laid to rest in Mountain View Cemetery in a non-endowned grave. This area of the cemetery does not receive any maintenance from the cemetery staff.
This Go Fund Me page is for us, his living descendants, to have a chance to contribute to and honor his memory.
Please take a moment to consider contributing to a legacy that we can pass on to future generations. Any amount will be appreciated and all contributions will go directly to the purchase of a tombstone.
With kindest regards,
Belle
