Bertrand Marteville 1958 – 2020

Bertrand Marteville was born in the town of Quimper, France on May 24, 1958. He was born to parents Pierre Marteville and Simone Motté. He grew up with his sister Anne Marteville. Orphaned at a young age, Bertrand immersed himself in music. He worked in a trendy music store and became a popular DJ. His favorite artists were Deep Purple, Prince, Miles Davis, Rod Stewart, and french artists like Gainbourg and Bashung, but he was open to any kind music as long as it was "good."

In his early 30th, he moved to L.A. with his sister Anne and brother-in-law for a few years. There, he worked in the fower industry and had a lot of good memories with his sister. Then he moved to New York City.

In Manhattan, Bertrand starting working in the restaurant industry, first at René Pujol and then Metropolitan Club, before landing at La Grenouille.

He met his wife Tanya on March 8, 2001 at Tout Va Bien and they fell in love. They were married in Brooklyn on April 22nd, 2005 and began saving for their shared "American Dream" of buying their own apartment. In 2010, they achieved their goal and bought their first place in Brooklyn.

They loved their home and they also loved to travel. One of their favorite trips was to Italy where they enjoyed exploring its history, food, and wine.

Tanya and Bertrand were partners, like a "needle and thread," as some described them. They surrounded themselves with many good friends. They never missed a Bastille Day celebration in Brooklyn, where they spent the day outside with many friends playing petanque. Bertrand even won the petanque competition in its opening year. He had a passion for soccer too which he shared with many of his friends. He was so proud when France won the 2018 World Cup! And he found joy in working at La Grenouille too, which became like family for him.

Bertrand was a kind, easy-going man who liked to take what life offered him. If he set his mind to learn something, he would do it. He always looked to the future.

Bertrand's life was cut short by complications to COVID-19, and he passed away on May 2, 2020. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, his family, and anyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
