A Future Dentist’s Journey to Global Healthcare

Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,

My name is Precious Machamire, and I am currently a sophomore at Texas State University, pursuing a degree in Public Health with a concentration in Health Equity and a minor in Sociology on a Pre-Dental track. In addition to my academic pursuits, I am a registered dental assistant with three years of experience. My ultimate goal is to become a dentist, allowing me to make a meaningful impact in the field of healthcare.

I am thrilled to share an incredible opportunity that has been presented to me. I have been accepted to participate in a five-week study abroad program at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, this summer. During this program, I will be enrolled in a course titled Preventative Diseases, which aligns closely with my academic and professional aspirations. Through this experience, I aim to grow in three key areas: academically, professionally, and culturally. My passion for learning, exploring, and embracing new environments drives me to take full advantage of this opportunity.

As a first-generation American born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, I am deeply grateful for the sacrifices my parents have made to provide me with the opportunity to pursue higher education and achieve the American Dream. Zimbabwe, my family’s home country, is classified as a "developing" nation, and I am eager to study the public healthcare system in Melbourne through a comparative lens. By examining healthcare models in the United States, Australia, and Zimbabwe, I hope to gain valuable insights that will enable me to contribute to healthcare improvements both in my current country and in Zimbabwe. I firmly believe that knowledge is a powerful tool for growth and change.
