A little while back, I saw a Facebook post from someone I know through Bible study. She wasn’t asking anyone for money or even for help. She was simply asking for prayer.

Knowing everything she had already been through, I reached out to see if there was anything we could do. During our conversation, I found out her Honda Pilot was having major issues, and my first thought was, “Let’s see if we can get it fixed.”

As we looked it over, we realized the situation was much bigger than we expected.

The A/C isn’t working, the brakes are worn completely metal-to-metal, and on top of that, the engine has a piston ring issue. Repairing the engine would require an extensive rebuild or replacing the entire engine—something that simply doesn’t make financial sense on this vehicle.

But the car is only part of the story.

Earlier this year, her life changed in an instant when she unexpectedly lost her only son in a tragic accident. No parent is ever prepared for that kind of loss. She is the mother of five children, and while her adult daughters have families and lives of their own, she still has two teenage daughters at home who depend on her every day.

As she tried to process the grief of losing her son so suddenly, she struggled to focus at work and eventually lost her job. Then, just a few months later, she experienced another heartbreaking loss when her sister passed away as well. Along with the emotional pain came unexpected funeral expenses and financial burdens that would overwhelm just about anyone.

Through all of this, she has never asked for handouts. In fact, the only thing she publicly asked for was prayer.

That’s why we wanted to step in.

Our plan is to make the Honda as safe and drivable as we reasonably can for the short term, but our real hope is to help her get into a dependable used vehicle that she can rely on without the constant fear of another expensive repair. Reliable transportation will help her as she looks for work, cares for her daughters, and begins rebuilding after such a difficult season.

If we’re blessed to raise more than what’s needed for a vehicle, the remaining funds will help with expenses related to getting back on her feet after losing her job and the unexpected costs that followed these tragedies.

She never asked us for financial help. She only asked for prayer. We simply saw a need and wanted to do something about it.
