In the wee hours of a cold December morning, Gretchen was startled out of her sleep by the smoke detector's piercing alarm. She ran into her living room where flames were burning an electrical wire. A quick thinking Gretchen attempted to smother the still relatively small flames with baking soda. Unable to squelch the flames, Gretchen ran to retrieve her cell phone to call 911. As she did so, she heard a woosh sound and watched in horror as the fire spread up the wall and into the wiring. She managed to make it outside, still in her bed clothes, and could only watch helplessly while the fire burned her home. Firefighters arrived to put out the fire, but only after it gutted her entire house.
