Reality and fantasy blend when a young jock struggling with identity grapples with a tenuous freedom spied from the bedroom window of a carefree young woman.

Hi! My name is Christine Salinas and I am an up-and-coming filmmaker who is a part of a passionate and talented Filmmaking Collective that met while studying Film and Video Production at SAIT. We will be creating my second Short Film called Look and See in July 2024 and are hoping to support its fulfillment through crowdfunding and personal investment.

The story follows Troy, a young, somewhat sheltered, jock who comes upon the inviting glow of a woman’s window while walking through an alley one night. Apprehensively at first, he watches her through a gap in the fence as she exists in the confines of her bedroom window. At his dismay and fascination, Troy quickly becomes enraptured as her strange behaviors start to seep into his own life.

This short explores the confines of being perceived and the freedom one can access by perceiving others. It examines how one uses idolization and projection as a conduit for change within. It takes place in the 1980’s when high school stereotypes defined an era (think John Hughes) and when these archetypes led the audience to believe they were watching a predictable story.

We ourselves are also experiencing a transition. Each of us working on this short film is taking a leap from student projects to professional endeavors. While our experience consists primarily of a few school assignments and recent short films, we are now embarking on something deeply personal and vulnerably ambitious. I am inviting a group of around ten individuals, along with anyone who supports us, to join in witnessing, attempting, failing, and ultimately succeeding together. It’s a tall ticket to look at your stories and say, “you are worth it, you deserved to be told”. I am trying to do that here.

Here's how we plan to use these funds:

Pre-Production ($1200)
  • Script Development: $500
  • Location Scouting: $300
  • Casting: $200
  • Storyboards and Shot Lists: $200
Production ($4500)
  • Director, Producer, and Crew: $2200 (including cinematographer, sound, gaffer, etc.)
  • Actors: $800
  • Equipment Rental: $1000 (camera, lights, sound gear)
  • Set Decoration: $300
  • Costuming: $400
  • Makeup: $100
Post-Production ($1700)
  • Editor: $800
  • Sound Design and Mixing: $400
  • Music/Composer: $300
  • Color Correction and Visual Effects: $200
Marketing and Distribution ($800)
  • Film Festival Submissions: $300
  • Marketing Materials (posters, social media ads): $500
Contingency ($300)

Total: $8500

Growing up, I first turned to movies as an escape from the battles of youth, but then turned to them as fantastical inspiration for what life could be like. I think movies are powerful because the stories you inhabit are powerful. I’m trying to create this expansive force for which I can mentally exist but at the same time, reach out to the young girl I once was that needed stories like this. My goal is to help people feel seen, to help people feel less alone and to selfishly be seen and hopefully reach others in the process. In 2023, after grueling 3 years of pandemic and a debilitating chronic illness, I took stock of my life and saw that there was something inside of me that needed to be expressed.

My dreams and the dreams of my fellow filmmakers do not exist on an island. Although we are learning how to be creative and tell good stories, we would also like to use our passion and film literacy to create amazing pictures, expand our experience with industry standard gear, and feed ourselves on set. I want to show my friends that it is okay to ask for more.

If you have read this far, please consider donating whatever amount you feel comfortable with and/or share this page on your social media or to anyone who would be interested in helping some passionate and driven young people actualize their dreams.
