A Fighter’s Toughest Round — Support Coach Devin

Donation protected
Hey everyone — my name is Devin. I’m a local boxing coach, mentor, and personal trainer based in Atlanta, GA. I appreciate you taking the time to read my story and learn more about what I’m currently going through. I’ll do my best to keep this short, but this injury has affected me deeply — physically, mentally, and spiritually — and it’s been tough to find the right words.

First off, I want you to know how much I love what I do. I’ve been training since 2006 and have had the privilege of working with some incredible fighters. These days, I’m honored to coach and mentor the next generation of talent. Helping mold young fighters into the best versions of themselves is something I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.

About a week ago, while training, I took a hit to my left eye. At first, it seemed minor. I’ve dealt with concussions, broken jaws, and even a blown eardrum before — so I figured this would just heal up like everything else. That night, the irritation grew, but I powered through like I always have. The next day, despite warning others to be careful with my left side, I ended up taking another shot — this time to my right eye.

At that point, both eyes were swollen and my vision was starting to blur, but I could still mostly see. That night, the pain and pressure in my eyes intensified and I started to feel slightly disorientated. In the middle of the night, I lost my balance at home — thanks to some bad timing and a slippery floor — and hit my head on the corner of a wall.

Despite being banged up and dazed, I tried to sleep it off. But by 4 a.m., I was hit with an intense, stabbing pain every time I blinked. My vision dropped to about 10% clarity, and I was overwhelmed by sharp headaches, vertigo, and disorientation. That pushed me to finally see an optometrist.

After 24 hours without sleep and visits to two eye specialists plus the ER for CT scans, the diagnosis came back: corneal abrasions in both eyes, nerve damage to the retina, and a mild concussion. The right eye abrasion is directly in my line of sight. The pain is still real and persistent — but every day, I’m holding on to the silver linings: the support of my fiancée (who I just proposed to two days before this happened) and the fighters I’ve committed myself to.

I’m continuing to show up for my team in whatever way I can — coaching, supervising classes, or just being a supportive presence. Tomorrow, I have another appointment with a cornea specialist, and surgery might be on the table. Right now, I’ve been told I’m legally “blind.” It’s a tough reality, but I’m staying hopeful.

This situation has already affected my ability to coach — which is not just my career, but my life’s passion. I’ve had to reschedule or cancel training sessions, which has led to a loss of income and added stress. If this continues, it could impact my ability to provide for my household and the people who depend on me.

If you’re lucky enough to have your health, please don’t take it for granted. After more than two decades in boxing and contact sports, I’d trade any of my past injuries for this one to be reversed.

I’m not looking for sympathy — I just want to share my experience and remind people how fragile yet precious our bodies really are. Your health is everything.

As my medical expenses pile up, my wife and I are putting together a crowdfunding campaign to help offset some of the costs. I’m so grateful for all the love, support, and good energy that’s come my way.

Much love to you all,

— Coach Devin
