Our beautiful daughter Yesenia recently suffered a severe asthma attack that led to her being put on life support. What we thought would be a short visit quickly became the most terrifying experience of our lives.
Within minutes of arriving at the hospital, her condition worsened so rapidly that she had to be placed on life support. A few days later, doctors discovered that her lungs had collapsed, and she needed an emergency V-V ECMO procedure, a lifesaving treatment that oxygenates the blood outside the body when the lungs can't do it on their own. ECMO is something no parent ever wants to hear, but we are grateful and blessed every day because it truly saved her life.
Just when we hoped she was getting better, doctors found mold in her lungs, which caused further complications and extended her recovery even longer. She has been through more in these past weeks than anyone should ever have to face.
Because of her critical condition, her time in the ICU, and her dependence on life support and VV-ECMO, Yesenia will not be able to return to work. Once she is stable enough to leave the hospital, she will need to go to a rehabilitation center to begin physical, occupational, and speech therapy before she can safely return home. She will need to move from her second-story apartment to a safer, more accessible place that meets her new needs.
Yesenia is a beautiful and a loving daughter, sister, and overall person, someone who brings a beautiful smile and warmth to everyone she meets. She also loved creating flower bouquets and sharing her creativity with others. She shouldn't have to worry about bills or housing while she is fighting to heal. Our only goal is to relieve that burden so she can focus entirely on her recovery.
