Why I’m Raising Funds

Last week. I stopped at a small family restaurant on the very outskirts of Siem Reap. A place where hardly any tourists pass by. I didn’t plan it. I just walked in, grabbed a seat, and immediately felt something different.

The mother cooked my entire meal from scratch right in front of me, skillet sizzling, fresh ingredients, all love. I started filming because the moment felt special.

When I went to pay, the daughters told me their father wanted to meet me. I figured I’d stay a few minutes. While we were waiting for him, the power suddenly went out. The kids brought out candles, their faces glowing in the dark, and the whole place turned into a scene straight out of a movie. I captured everything, and it felt like God, fate, or whatever you want to call it, was telling me to slow down and be present.

When the father arrived, that quick meeting turned into a deep conversation about his life, his losses, and everything he survived during the Khmer Rouge era. I wasn’t expecting any of this, but sometimes the most powerful stories find you when you’re not looking.

At the end, he shared something personal:

He’s been saving for his daughter, Sovan Meyhor, so she can continue her education and study English at the Australian Centre for Education (ACE) here in Cambodia. She just graduated high school, and he wants her to have opportunities that he never had.

That’s the moment I knew I wasn’t sent there by accident.

What the Funds Will Support

I visited ACE myself and confirmed all the costs so everything is transparent and accurate.

1. English Education at ACE

$290 per step (10-week course)

$29 per book needed for each step

$10 placement test (to determine starting level)

The father believes she may need around 3 steps, but I set the goal for 5 steps just to ensure she’s fully covered.

5 steps x $320 = $1,600

($290 tuition + $29 book per step)

This gives her everything she needs — placement test, materials, and the full program if she requires all levels.

2. A Motorbike for School and Work

The father told me he could get a reliable used motorbike for $800, and he was completely humble about it. Even when I asked permission to help, he was only focused on “just enough.”

But I want her to have something safe, dependable, and long-lasting.

So I allocated $1,600 for the motorbike.

3. Extra Support for the Family

Education + motorbike totals $3,200.

But I felt led to give the family a little extra cushion — whether that’s for household needs, repairs, medical costs, or anything they’ve quietly been carrying on their own.

So I rounded the fundraiser to:

They said I’m family now, and honestly, that’s how I feel too. Cambodia has given me so much. I just want to give something meaningful back.
