A father’s recovery after open heart surgery

Hi everyone, my name is Erin and I am sharing my cousin, Patrick’s, story with you during a challenging chapter in his life in hopes that we can come together to help him and his family stay afloat. It all began innocently enough with a routine visit to his primary care doctor, where he casually mentioned having a history of a heart murmur. Having a heart murmur for most of his life, this detail seemed so small in the grand scheme of things. As instructed by his primary care doctor, he followed up with cardiology.

Following an unsettling EKG result, he received the unfortunate news that his aortic valve was severely damaged. As you can imagine, this unexpected diagnosis threw him into a world of uncertainty and fear, a world where the ticking of his heart sounded louder than ever before. Despite efforts to find a local imaging facility for an MRI of his heart, he faced a roadblock due to insurance purposes/the uniqueness of this imaging. With symptoms of shortness of breath and chest pain growing more pronounced, he found himself seeking answers at Tampa General Hospital.

The medical team's words were sobering – the urgency of his condition was undeniable, and the threats of a stroke or a heart attack were imminent. It was in that moment of vulnerability and realization that he had to make the difficult decision to undergo open heart surgery for an aortic valve replacement on 3/11/2024. The weight of this news was immense, and it served as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact it has on those we hold dear.

After being discharged from the hospital yesterday, 3/19/2024, Patrick now embarks on a journey of healing and recovery with his incredible wife standing by as pillar of unwavering strength and love. Jennifer has taken on the role of the sole provider ensuring that their children’s (Julian 14, Isaiah 11) lives continue with as much normalcy as possible.
