As many people know on February 21st 2021 my life and my family’s life was changed forever with a baby in tow. I was diagnosed with multiple Massive Bilateral Pulmonary Embolisms, right lung infarction & my heart was damaged due to the strain it was under, I was admitted to ITU in Morriston Hospital for a week and put on a continuous infusion of heparin. After my discharge from the hospital and being put on the anticoagulant Apixiban, I never got better, it was a constant battle for each breath. Doctors kept telling me give it time you will get better but I knew something much worse was coming my way without actually knowing. After multiple collapses caused by syncope (not enough oxygen & the pressure between my heart & lungs being to much) and being changed to warfarin and so much loss in my life, I had a right heart catheter done and it confirmed the devastating rare CTEPH disease was the cause of me getting worse not better. I was told by my cardiac consultant I will now be under the Pulmonary Hypertension teams in Hammersmith Hospital London & following on from my pulmonary MRI if my CTEPH was operable then the waiting list for one of the most complex operations in the world where only 4 surgeons and one hospital can perform, The Royal Papworth Cambridge. I was given home oxygen tanks to be able to carry on with daily life with my son and relied on the care of my family to get us through. On the 5th of September 2023 I had a Pulmonary Endarterectomy, I can’t really put into words what waking up 4 days later was like still ventilated, in so much pain & no recollection of how I got there (due to a large 4 hour lung haemorrhage causing me to require V A ECMO and blood transfusions) the operation in total was 14 hours and I went on to contact hospital acquired pneumonia & a plural effusion. There is no preparedness than can make you ready for when you do wake other than fight for every last breathe to stay alive for my family, for the doctors, surgeons, nurses that had saved my life. The Royal Papworth Hospital did just that, this amazing one of a kind hospital saved me. I was patient 2724 since 1996 (when they started this operation) I still have mild CTEPH but with the Royal Papworths work I am on the road hopefully to a normal hopeful life. My father Andrew Osborne is sky diving to raise money for the Royal Papworths future patients whether it be PEA surgery, Lung/Heart transplants, Cystic Fibrosis treatment etc for all the specialty’s they cover. They saved me, they ask for no thanks to them it’s their job to me and my family it is everything, please help us in giving another mum, dad, daughter, son, sister, brother, wife, husband a second chance at life I had because of the Royal Papworth Hospital because you really don’t know what’s around the corner and we want to make sure our NHS especially life saving treatment can continue to save lives. Thank you!!
