Hi my name is Lora and I am fundraising for my niece Destney.
December of 2023 Destney developed what was thought to be a seasonal cold.
By Early January our Family was to learn that this was no regular seasonal anything.
After a visit to her G.P Destney was sent to Huntsville Hospital for blood work.
Within a few hours she was being transported to Sick kids Hospital in Toronto with her white blood cell count through the roof and a possible diagnosis of Leukemia.
After extended testing we soon found out that yes indeed Destney had Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Her medical team at sick kids started the ball rolling for treatment, but soon after and more testing they discovered that she also had 2 mutations FT3- ITD which comes with an unfavorable prognosis and EVT6-12P which gives a strong prognosis of relapse. This would require the team to lay out a new plan for treatment and would mean a more aggressive type of Chemo.
After 2 rounds of Chemo and 1 round of low dose radiation Destney was ready for a bone marrow transplant.
Destneys little brother was a match and the team started prepping him for the procedure.
Talk about a proud young man!
The transplant took place May 24th 2023, after 100 days Destney was released but not able to leave the Toronto area.
Destney and her mom then spent another 2 months, in an apartment close to Sick Kids so she could be monitored closely by her team.
Everything was looking good and she returned home.
Destney returned to School in January 2024 to finish her grade 12 and even made it to her prom!
We thought she was in the clear, numerous appointments since her day of release showed she was in remission.
Unfortunately a few days after Prom Destney began to feel ill. By July 7th Destney was admitted into Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, she had relapsed. Thankfully neither mutations have returned, so progress has been made.
2 rounds of Chemo have been completed since July 7th and another Bone Marrow transplant will be scheduled in the coming weeks. Thankfully they have 2 donors lined up both are 9/10 match.
Destney is currently at home as the Chemo has put her back into remission. She is receiving required testing a couple days a week as well as Platlet transfusions when required (cells in your blood that form clots to stop bleeding)
This time around Destney's Mom can not stay with her as she is now 18 and no longer fits the requirement to be in Sick Kids. They have made well over 35 trips to Toronto since July and close to the same amount to Barrie for testing and monitoring.
Once transplant takes place Destney will need to be in Hospital for a minimum of 100 days. After this she will again need to stay in Toronto area to be monitored.
This last year and a half has caused strain on the family's financial situation and it's not about to get any better.
We are praying and asking for some help to relive some stress during this time.
We appreciate anything and everything you do, even if you can't donate, please share Destney's story.
I will make frequent updates on her journey.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
